If you’ve never been to a Contributor Day at a WordCamp, you might be a little nervous on the first go. The name on its own, Contributor Day, can sound like it’s an exclusive club for only those people who have given a lot of time or provide a high level of expertise.

Does everyone in the room know everything there is to know about WordPress?  Nope!  They are just like you – excited about WordPress and ready to contribute.

Here are some pointers for your first Contributor Day:

1. Open Source takes all sorts – WordPress is an open source project. It’s built, from top to bottom, by the people who offer their time. You don’t have to have a grand plan in order to help. All you need to know is what your skills are.
2. Everyone is an expert at something – Don’t measure yourself by the skills of the person next to you. Not only does our community need people with lots of different skills, but even experts started out not knowing anything.
3. You’ve just finished up two days of WordPress inspiration – Why not round it out by practicing with people who are just as excited about all of this as you are?
4. Find a buddy – Buddies are easy to find in the WordPress community. If you didn’t bring a friend with you, introduce yourself to a new friend at the table!
5. Use your feet – It can be hard to know what to work on.  If the team you start with doesn’t fit the skills you know you have, wander on to a different one.

As with all WordCamps: Have questions? Just ask! There are helpful volunteers all around at WordCamp Albuquerque. If the person you ask doesn’t have the answer, then chances are that they can point you in the right direction.

Contributor Day is included in the price of your WordCamp Albuquerque ticket. It’s a chance to meet face-to-face with people you work with online or welcome interested new contributors.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We’ve had a number of questions about WordCamp about what to expect over the weekend. We’ve tried to cover them all here, but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

I MISSED OUT ON A TICKET, CAN I PLEASE HAVE ONE?

Yes!  We sold out once but released a limited number of tickets.  If you are interested in getting a last minute ticket,  you can check here. 

ARE THE SESSIONS BEING RECORDED?

Yes! We are aiming to record all the sessions and upload them to WordPress.tv after the event.

WILL THERE BE WIFI?

Yes! We’ve made provision for WiFi at the venue, instructions will be posted around the venue but here is the TL;DR:

WHAT TIME DOES IT START?

The first sessions will kick off around 9am on each day, however please arrive earlier for registration if possible so we can give you your badge and shirt. Registration will be open from 8am and you’ll only need to visit the registration desk once.  Unless you just want to kibbitz, we’re ok with that.

WHAT TIME DOES IT END?

The sessions will wrap up at about 5pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday, however we also have an afterparty on Saturday night. The afterparty begins at 7pm till 11pm but you can come and go as you please, just remember to bring your badge. There will be food and drinks at the afterparty so there’s no need to get dinner beforehand, but we won’t stop you if you are so inclined.

DO I NEED A LAPTOP?

You won’t need a laptop, however we do recommend having something such as a laptop, tablet or notepad to take notes on as there will be lots of valuable learning from our amazing speakers.

WHAT IF I HAVE A PROBLEM ON THE DAY?

Please see one of our awesome volunteers for any issues you run into. They will be wearing red badges and will be able to help.  Organizers will be wearing green badges.  Red or Green – see what we did there?

You can always hail a cab, an Uber, or a Lyft. Depending on traffic and where you are in the city, you will most likely get to WordCamp Albuquerque within less than half an hour. The venue is at CNM Work Force Training Center, 5600 Eagle Rock Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM

If you want to use public transportation, Albuquerque has city buses and a rider app here.

If you are coming from the Albuquerque International Sunport you can get to WordCamp via:

• Get on I-25 N from Sunport Blvd, Sunport Loop SE and Sunport Blvd
• Follow I-25 N to Pan American Frontage Rd N. Take exit 233 toward Alameda from I-25 N
• Merge onto Pan American Frontage Rd N
• Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto Alameda Blvd NE
• Turn right onto San Mateo Blvd NE
• Turn right onto Eagle Rock Ave NE

If you are coming from the North you can arrive by:

• Follow I-25 S to Pan American Fwy NE in Bernalillo County. Take exit 234 from I-25 S
• Follow Pan American Fwy NE to Eagle Rock Ave NE in Albuquerque
• Keep right to continue on Pan American Fwy NE
• Turn right onto Eagle Rock Ave NE

If you are coming from the South you can arrive by:

• Follow I-25 N to Pan American Frontage Rd N in Albuquerque. Take exit 233 from I-25 N
• Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 233 toward Alameda Blvd/NM-528
• Merge onto Pan American Frontage Rd N
• Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto Alameda Blvd NE
• Turn right onto San Mateo Blvd NE
• Turn right onto Eagle Rock Ave NE

If you are coming from the East you can arrive by:

• Follow I-40 W to Albuquerque. Take exit 233 from I-25 N

• Merge onto Pan American Frontage Rd N
