Is WordCamp for you?

Not sure if WordCamp Albuquerque is right for you?  What if your best friend is a wookie?  It depends on who you are and what your goals are.

What is a WordCamp?

A WordCamp is a community-driven conference centered on WordPress. While WordCamps are not big, expensive conferences held at high-end venues, the material covered is very relevant to those using WordPress and they provide a great opportunity to get to know other WordPress users in your local community.

Who is this for?

Our audience for this WordCamp is intermediate level users who have an understanding of what WordPress is, but want to dig a little deeper into what is available to help them build amazing websites. The speaker lineup hasn’t been finalized yet, but expect sessions covering things like recommended WordPress plugins, WordPress security best practices, and more.  If you are familiar with what WordPress themes and plugins are (and have maybe even dabbled in editing CSS for a given theme), this WordCamp is for you.

What will I get out of it?

In addition to learning more about WordPress that can help you build even better websites, you will get a chance to meet others in our community using WordPress (and of course get some awesome swag!).  Looking to team up on a project? WordCamp Albuquerque is a great place to find a project collaborator. Having problems with a WordPress website you manage? We expect to run a happiness bar during the event (more details coming) where you can get help.

What other local resources are there?

If you are not convinced you should attend WordCamp Albuquerque or are otherwise not able to attend, we have regular meetups that can help you both learn about WordPress and meet other local bloggers, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, etc.  For a full list of upcoming meetups, check out the Albuquerque WordPress meetup group. The meetups include:

  • Albuquerque WordPress Meetup
  • WordPress Work Along

What online resources are there for beginners?

WordCamp Albuquerque may not be right for you this time around, but luckily there are some excellent resources online for helping you get started with WordPress (in addition to our local meetups):

What is Contributor Day?

Like many Open Source projects, WordPress is a community oriented tool. If you use WordPress and it’s helped you build your business or a project you’re passionate about, sooner or later you’ll want to give back. Contributor Day is one way to do that. There are many areas you can help with to make WordPress a stronger tool and available to more people.  This article talks about a few of those areas open to you regardless of your level of expertise.

Contributor Day is a time set aside where WordPress users can come meet with others and work on improving our favorite CMS. They are often held in conjunction with a WordCamp. Any level of WordPress user is welcome and can help. Albuquerque’s WordCamp is wrapping up with a Contributor Day and we hope you’ll come.

Sakin Shrestha will be speaking at WordCamp ABQ

We are excited to announce Sakin Shrestha will be coming to speak at WordCamp Albuquerque 2018 all the way from Nepal.

Sakin has started various technology companies starting with Catch Internet, which provides technology solutions.  In 2012, he created Catch Themes to provide premium themes to clients who needed more functionality and support. He also founded DevotePress, a magazine that helps developers with in-depth tutorials.

I am passionate about helping this sector grow, for many reasons. The technology sector creates jobs for many young Nepalis who would otherwise migrate to foreign countries. It lets Nepali professionals develop skills for a fast-changing global workplace, and compete at a high level with anyone, anywhere in the world. If it grows, it will provide a viable career option for many young Nepalis, and help us reap the benefits of a global economy.

Sakin is also involved in ThemeReview.co, providing reviews for WordPress themes. To help Nepali theme developers access the international market, he  created  Theme Palace, a curated marketplace of themes.  He also organizes regular WordPress meetups and WordCamps in Nepal, and has spoken at technology events in Nepal and abroad.
