What to Expect at WordCamp

If you’re new to WordCamp, you might be wondering just what to expect.

When you arrive at WordCamp Albuquerque, you’ll check in at the registration table located just inside the main entrance to CNM’s Smith Brasher Hall to receive a lanyard with your badge. Your badge is your key to getting into everything including the After-Party. Please do not lose your badge!

Doors open at 8am on both Friday and Saturday, and there will be self-serve coffee and tea to start the morning off right. The first session starts promptly at 9am in the main auditorium of CNM’s Smith Brasher Hall on both days.

We will have an afternoon networking session where you can get to know Attendees and check out our Event Sponsor tables. Grab some cool SWAG from our Community SWAG table, too.

Charles Garrison from x10 Marketing will also be doing candid video interviews of Attendees during the open networking session. This is your chance to share what you love about WordPress and your experience at WordCamp. These interviews are optional and will be used to help promote our future WordCamps.

FRIDAY SESSIONS

Friday’s talks are designed to appeal to everyone who uses or wants to get to know more about WordPress. We will also explore the importance of the Open Source movement and what it holds for the future.

SATURDAY SESSIONS

The Saturday schedule is broken into four tracks: Designer, Developer, Business and Blogger.

  • There are 2 Designer Tracks on Saturday. Saturday’s opening Keynote will explore how to approach design within WordPress. A talk on how to implement CSS animations will follow in one of the conference rooms. Be sure to attend Friday’s sessions so that you can catch Liz Brown’s UI for Accessibility talk as well.
  • The Developer Track is intended for WordPress developers of all levels. A basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and working with WordPress is recommended.
  • The Business Track covers topics that more generally apply to people who are using WordPress to run a business.
  • The Blogger track is for everyone who wants to learn how to get the most out of the WordPress platform.

Feel free to move from room to room during the day, attending the talks that appeal most to you. Your event badge will have the schedule on the back so you can keep track of the talks you want to attend.

WordCamps are a great place to network and meet people, so bring your business cards and a friendly smile. Lunch and snacks will be offered on site with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options also available.

The After Party at Explora

At the end of the day, you will have 2 hours between the end of WordCamp itself and the start of our After Party at Explora. We will have light finger foods, non-alcoholic refreshments, and dessert as well as a DJ and dancing under the stars on Explora’s upstairs patio.

The After Party is a place to relax, unwind, and explore all of the cool exhibits. We’ll have the whole place to ourselves, so don’t be shy and snap that selfie in Explora’s oversized and super cool elevator complete with red couches.

Contributor Day

Feel free to join us at 10am on Sunday, January 21 for Contributor Day! There is no experience necessary to participate. Contributor Day is a hands-on event where we all give back to WordPress. Maybe you want to spruce up some documentation, answer some questions in the forums, or maybe work on some code for the Core? Whatever it is, Contributor Day is the perfect time to do it. Snacks and coffee will be provided. Even if you aren’t comfortable working with code, you can still help out on Contributor Day by testing and providing feedback.

Contributor day will be held at Ideas and Coffee Coworking space.

Camp Values

It is important to remember that WordCamp Albuquerque is an inclusive event. We expect everyone to:

  • Be considerate, respectful, and collaborative.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory or harassing behavior and speech.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert WordCamp Team Organizers if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress.
  • Participate in an authentic and active way. In doing so, you help to create WordCamp Albuquerque and make it your own.

Any intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory or demeaning conduct will not be tolerated. This policy carries through to the After Party as well. If you feel unsafe or harassed in any way, please reach out to any WordCamp Organizer. Organizer’s will be wearing Aqua WordCamp Albuquerque shirts).

We hope that you all have a wonderful WordCamp, and use this as an opportunity to grow and learn.

  • If you have a question, ask it.
  • If you have knowledge to give, share it.
  • If you have a joke to tell, tell it.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

The WordCamp Albuquerque Team
